Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you boil a shock doctor mouthguard?

Most Shock Doctor mouthguards only need 60 seconds in boiling water to soften enough for moulding — but always check the exact instructions on the packaging or product insert first. Some models, like the Gel Max, recommend boiling at a rolling boil for 60 seconds, then immediately transferring it to your mouth for fitting. Overboiling can warp the shape or reduce cushioning, so set a timer and don’t leave it in too long.

Tip: Use a slotted spoon to submerge and lift the mouthguard safely — and don’t bite down too hard during fitting; a firm press with your fingers and tongue is usually better for comfort and protection.

How do you make a shock doctor mouthgaurd fit?

Getting a Shock Doctor mouthguard to fit properly is all about timing, pressure, and patience. Once it’s been boiled for the recommended time (usually 60 seconds), quickly transfer it into your mouth and centre it over your upper teeth.

From there:

Use your fingers to press the mouthguard against your front teeth and molars.

Close your mouth and suck in gently to create a vacuum, helping the guard form around your teeth.

Use your tongue to press it against the roof of your mouth while applying firm pressure from the outside with your fingers.

Leave it in for around 30–40 seconds until the material firms up, then cool it in cold water. If the fit’s not quite right, most models — especially the Gel Max and Superfit — can be remoulded by repeating the process once or twice.

💡 Tip: Don’t chew the guard while it’s soft. You’ll get a better fit (and longer-lasting shape) if you let the material form naturally around your teeth.
