Muscles contain 21 types of amino acid building blocks, all of which are necessary for tissue repair and growth. However, the branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine) are considered to be very important for anyone who trains hard. Unlike other amino acids that are processed in the liver, these unique compounds are utilised directly in your muscles, where they play a key role in tissue growth and energy production.
Studies show that during exercise, BCAA breakdown dramatically increases, due to muscle damage and the amino acids being used for energy production. Unfortunately, because over 30% of the amino acids in muscles are BCAA's, this process can lead to muscle catabolism (wastage) and a reduction in post-exercise repair and growth. The body is able to synthesise some amino acids itself, however, BCAAs are what we call “essential amino acids" meaning that they need to be obtained from your diet.
